The phrase “A Work in Progress” really resonated well with me somehow. I first came across this phrase when I see people post pictures of their unfinished artworks—be it visual or literary—on Instagram using the hashtag #wip.
I like this idea a lot because it’s kind of like a metaphor for my life (or anyone’s really). I feel that everyone and everything is always a work (of art) in progress. This blog is going to be a work in progress as it’s never going to be perfect! Especially in terms of content, consistency, and form. We’re all constantly growing, changing every day to be better than the day before. There are bound to be mistakes along the way, errors to correct, accidents made but it then becomes our job to keep moving forward. Like trying to erase a mistake made on a pencil sketch using an eraser, no matter how hard we try to erase that annoying 2B pencil line…you know there’s still going to be that visible gray pencil mark residue. This shows to me that we truly cant ‘erase’ the mistakes of our past, they’ll always have a mark in our minds and hearts, but we can always learn from them to create (or be) something even more appealing!
Just like making a full-on pencil sketch on paper, and then deciding that it was not the result we wanted, we could always erase it and start over or even, change the medium to a canvas and start painting! Life plans can change out of nowhere too! We are not in control of any paint that accidentally spills onto our canvas, but I do think that we are in control of the resulting artwork that we want to make out of it.
This phrase also resonates well because it reminds me to face setbacks in a positive light, that I shouldn’t be afraid to make mistakes and avoid complacency. After all, mistakes are the best kinds of teachers.
We can always choose when to stop and say that we’re “done” with a piece of artwork but in the grand scheme of things, as an artist, we’re never finished creating the many forms of art. Just like how we can be satisfied with our small wins in our everyday lives but looking at the bigger picture, there are still so many things we don’t know and we can learn—and unlearn—about!
So just like this blog or those unfinished #wip artworks on Instagram, I’d like to believe that we are all in the progress of becoming our own ever-evolving beautiful works of art.
What’s great is that perhaps, this is how I currently define “A Work in Progress” but who knows that sometime later I might have an additional or change of interpretation for this title.
Essentially, the title “a work in progress” is also a work in progress~
Stay tuned for more!
